Thrift stores, yard sales, and Facebook Marketplace are where many eBay sellers start, because you can buy items for a few dollars and learn the whole process without much money at risk. Here's a simple way to get going.
1. Set up before you shop
- Create your eBay seller account with a professional username and complete identity verification and payment setup.
- Get basic shipping supplies: boxes, tape, bubble wrap or packing paper, and a printer or 4x6 label printer.
- Pick a spot at home to photograph, store, and pack items.
2. Know what to look for
Categories beginners often scan first:
- Brand-name clothing and sneakers, including vintage pieces
- Electronics and accessories, tested and working
- Collectibles like trading cards, memorabilia, and vintage items
- Seasonal items, bought off-season and listed ahead of demand
None of these are guaranteed winners. The only way to know is to check.
3. Check sold listings in the aisle
Before you buy, search the item in the eBay app, filter by Sold Items, match the condition, and sort by most recent. If similar items have sold several times at a price that covers fees, shipping, and your cost with room to spare, it's a candidate. Here's the full method: How to find what sells on eBay.
4. Write a listing buyers can find
- Title: brand + model + size + color + condition, e.g. "Nike Air Max 270 Men's Size 10 Running Shoes Black/Red".
- Photos: natural light, several angles, labels and tags, and any flaws. Honest photos reduce returns.
- Category and item specifics: fill them in fully so your item shows up in filtered searches.
- Format: auctions can work, but many resellers (including us) stick to Buy It Now with Best Offer for predictable pricing.
5. Ship fast and pack well
Ship within a day with tracking. Pack so nothing shifts in the box. A damaged item usually means a refund, return shipping, and wasted time. Good packaging protects your profit.
6. Track what works
Keep receipts and note what each item cost and sold for. After your first 10-20 sales you'll see which categories are worth your time.
